Save up 7 power nodes, buy a contact beam and upgrade straight to the special function. It's very powerful and it's a great panic weapon when you're being stormed. Also obviously very good for those fuckers that run at you and headbutt you, stalkers I think they're called. Works brilliantly for the elevator up to the solar array. I used the detonator a lot because you really don't need to upgrade it at all. Also there is no shortage of stasis packs in the game. It took me ages to get used to actually using it regularly but once you get into using it properly then it's fantastic. One of the best tips I got before I tried it was to upgrade stasis first.
